Tibet - Gyantse to Shegar
The photographs on this page cover Gyantse, Shigatse and then onto the town of Shegar.
- Gyantse is a traditional Tibetan town with the superb Kumbum Stupa at the Pelkhor Monastery and the ruins of the Dzong which was the site of a siege when the British were trying to open up Tibet with Younghusband's army.
- Shigatse is the second largest city in Tibet, after Lhasa, and is famous for the Tashilhunpo monastery which is the traditional home of the Panchen Lama.
- Sakya is a monastic town with very little Chinese influence with a very large working monastery in the South and old ruins to the North of the centre of town.
- Gyamtso La at 5220m is the highest pass that the Friendship Highway crosses. The highway then descends down to Shegar.
